A resilient home garden network

Growing a resilient home
garden network in Mitchells Plain

In 2013, we launched the Mitchells Plain Food Freedom, a project dedicated to equipping community members to grow their own food, since then, we’ve supported the implementation of home gardens in 238 homes.

Climate Resilience

We spent some time working on a generic response to climate change that could be easily replicated. The includes energy efficiency and carbon reduction, biodiversity and conservation, organic food and medicine, waste and water management.

We’ve set up 13 homes with climate adaption systems, for demonstration and replication. Systems include rain harvesting, grey water, perennial food system, shading, free energy applications.

Start-Up Home Gardening

This workshop introduces the why and how of home gardening, there is a focus on container gardens as many back yards are concrete and too small for bigger systems.

Green Tea Tuesdays

These workshops teach about systems broader than food growing, we look at things like grey water, medicinal teas, bread baking, fruit trees.
